There are about 50 million Polish speakers, some ten million of whom live outside of Poland with large Polish communities in the United Kingdom and the United States. It is one of the western Slavonik languages and related to Czech, Slovak and Sorbian.
Learning some Polish expressions shows an interest in the Polish culture and country, and people respond positively when you make an effort to speak their language. Polish is classed as a Category 2 language which means that it has significant linguistic differences to English, and is correspondingly harder to learn than languages such as French for English speakers. The Polish alphabet is based on the Roman alphabet but with extra letters distinguished with diacritics (accents). Pronunciation of Polish takes some getting used to but is not impossible. The Polish pronunciation of individual letters is different to the English and two letters can represent one sound. In short, for the beginner, it is helpful to listen to and copy native speakers using a program such as Linguata. Yes. In Polish as with other languages, it is possible to learn the key expressions you will need as a tourist in a few months. The key is to learn the type of phrases you will need, e.g. the Polish phrases for "two cups of coffee", "the bill, please" and so on.
