Italian language FAQ

Question: Are Italian sounds easy for English speakers to copy?

Yes, it is much easier for English speakers to pronounce Italian than many other languages. Italian words are spelt phonetically, so that also helps when working out how words should sound.

Naturally the best way to acquire a good accent is to listen repeatedly to a native Italian speaker and to repeat the words that you hear over and over again. This is where Linguata Italian is so helpful, because you can decide how many times to listen to any given word or phrase and then repeat them as many times as you like.

Question: Is it possible to learn enough Italian in a few months to get by as a tourist in Italy?

Yes, it is definitely possible to do this with only a few minutes studying each day, as long as you focus on important key words and phrases. If possible, you need to reinforce what you have learnt with lots of repetition, as almost no adults can expect to learn new vocabulary without hearing words spoken again and again.

Question: How often should I practice to learn some useful Italian?

When learning any language, it is probably more effective to practice little and often rather than do nothing for 2 weeks and then spend a couple of hours on it. It is amazing how much you can learn in a short time if you do only a few minutes each day. You can download a free trial of Linguata Italian and start practising Italian now.

Question: How many of the words in Italian are the same as in English?

Many English words are almost exactly the same as in Italian, and many more are very close, which certainly is very helpful when you are learning vocabulary. It also means that sometimes it is easy to guess at some words even if you have never come across them before. Here's an example. What do you think the word "teatro" might mean? Yes, it's "theatre". How about "cattedrale"? It means "cathedral". You will find that you are already familiar with many of the words for food - for example - pasta, spaghetti, ravioli.
