Question: I want to study Greek. How would you recommend I begin? 

Vocabulary aquisition is a large and often neglected part of the language learning process. We would suggest starting to learn Greek by learning simple Greek words and phrases. This is a fast and easy approach giving immediate positive feedback and pegs from which to hang later grammar aquisition.   Our software Linguata teaches many key Greek words and phrases. Question: How long will it take me to learn Greek?

Greek is generally classed as a Category 2 language signifying that it is harder to learn than languages which have a closer relationship to English (such as French, Italian ...) , but easier than languages such as Chinese and Japanese. How long it will take you to learn Greek thoroughly depends on your comittment to learning, your ability to learn a new language and the time you have available. Question: What is the Greek alphabet.

There are many different writing systems of which the Roman alphabet, in which English and many languages are written, is just one. The Greek alphabet is another, and apart from writing in Greek and is commonly used for scientific notation, with characters such as alpha, beta, gamma and so on being widely used within the scientific community internationally.

Question: Do I have to learn to read the Greek alphabet to learn Greek?

You do not need to learn th Greek script to learn Greek. Greek words can be transliterated into the Roman alphabet, which means that the Greek sounds are represented using the Roman alphabet. This is necessarily approximate and Linguata Greek allows you to switch between the Greek and roman alphabets as you prefer.
